Justin Greaves, IR Rat Racing, has taken his debut victory in the British Gravity Bike Championships after a dramatic day of racing at Priors Marston for Round 5 of 2017. Gridline Ellison Gearbolt Racing rider, Zack Leader, had to settle for 2nd having lead for the majority of the day. Delta Cruz Racing's Stef Cree took his debut podium after finishing 3rd at his home race.
With 2017 being the British Gravity Bike Championship's first ever visit to Priors Marston, most riders went into race day completely blind and having to learn as the day went on. Stef Cree was a firm favourite heading into the weekend, with Priors being his home race.
The day got underway dramatically after Stef Cree suffered from front brake issues, losing all stopping power in the front brake. He also suffered a puncture in his rear tyre shortly after the warm up run. Race 1 saw Greaves have a huge moment and take a trip up the bank, yet managing to stay on his bike and suffer minor damage to the rear of his bike. Cree, now working on rear brakes alone, had to work around his bike issues. Zack Leader set a blistering time and set the benchmark for the rest of the day's racing.
Race 2 saw Zack Leader have a monster crash in which he over ran at the left hander of the corkscrew and ran up the steep grass bank.
"I'm not sure what I hit after going up the grass bank, whether it was a tree or a stump but I was thrown from my bike. It then felt like a good few seconds before I came back to earth again. I had enough time to think 'I've not hit the floor yet'. I eventually smacked hard against the ground, landing on my head, shoulder and knee."
"I'm incredibly sore but nothing is broken, thankfully. I'll be good to go for Worlaby, I passed the medical assessment at Priors and tried to race again so I should be fine."
Cree also took a tumble at the corkscrew in Race 3 but walked away unharmed. Leader lead after Races 1, 2 and 3 but Race 4 saw Justin Greaves bust Leader's impressive benchmark and leave the 18-year-old struggling to improve on his pace. Despite his best efforts, Greaves prevailed and took his first win of his BGBC career. Leader was 2nd, Cree took 3rd. Danny Floyde took a personal best finish of 4th, Sam Phillips also took a career best in 5th.
Ian Round's absence means Zack Leader now leads the championship by just 4 points ahead of Justin Greaves, Ian Round is 7 points behind Greaves and 11 behind Leader. Stef Cree is 4th.
The British Gravity Bike Championships continue for Round 6 of 2017 this Sunday 16th July in Worlaby in North Lincolnshire, where we go racing for the penultimate time this season.
